I just got back from the Helen DeVos Children's hospital, where I am guessing some little girl's going to be very happy! Five new robes were donated to the Child Life Program, a very worthy cause and one that I have supported since the beginning of this year. For more information, read here. Thank you for allowing me to give back to the community I live in! There is nothing better than bringing joy to a child stuck in the hospital facing a serious illness.
If you have been thinking about giving back somehow, I encourage you to make a plan for this new year. It is good for the soul and really makes you appreciate everything we have been blessed with. Have a wonderful New Year!

Merry Christmas...a little early!

The holidays have already been in full force around here. Parties, making Christmas angels with my husband's 4th grade class [see below], buying presents, and sending out last minute orders has left me with little time to blog!

I wanted to make sure to take the time to express my sincere gratitude for this past year. MiniMe BabyGear has seen tremendous growth, and has turned into something I am very proud of. I owe that to you! I thank you from the bottom of my heart and wish your family a very Merry Christmas!
Sincerely, Jamie Bird

Amazing!

Yesteday a very interesting thing happened. I woke up, played with my son for a couple of hours, finished decorating the Christmas tree (I know, I know, a little early:-) and this really strange thing happened--the world of MiniMe BabyGear went on without me! I am so used to checking my e-mail first thing, returning e-mails for about an hour, working out issues. I love to do it, but sometimes it sets our day off on the wrong foot because I get so involved first thing. It felt so good to just relax, play with him, and give him my full attention for a while before doing business stuff. I am going to try and do it more often!
My great find of the week is: POTTY TOPPERS! Found at Babies R Us, they have saved me many gross moments, and I have only have them for a day. I get so sick of wiping pee off public toilets and trying to set out toilet paper only to have it fall off when I set my son on the potty, and I really hated the thought of bringing a disposable toilet seat everywhere I go (the bottom of it still touches the dirty seat, which I find disgusting). Retail is $4.99 for 10 of them. Worth every penny, as far as I am concerned!

Gobble, Gobble- Have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your families! Take the day and celebrate the many things we have to be thankful for. Wishing you a very happy and relaxing holiday.

Made in the USA

The recent recalls of things Made in China have a lot of people begging for items made right here in the good old USA. So, why do people go to China? Why can’t products be made here instead?

Obviously, the biggest reason people go overseas is the price. United States manufacturers, in most cases, cannot compete. Currently, all of my products are made right here in the United States, but I admit that I have looked overseas. I cannot compete price-wise on a national level without going out of this country. For me, I have found that to produce my items in the states as opposed to in China costs me four to five times more.

Price aside, I prefer manufacturing here, which is why I have stayed in the USA. But we have to know that if we start the cry for products made in the USA, we are going to need to be willing to fork over the dough. Are you ready to pay $50 for a Barbie Doll? $40 for a set of blocks? I think many American companies are willing to come back if only consumers will start paying the price for goods made here. Otherwise, there will be no incentive for coming back. Did you know approximately 88% of children's toys are currently made in China? I don't even think American Girl dolls are made in the USA.

What are your thoughts- are you willing to pay four to five times more for something if it is made in the USA?

It doesn't happen often...

I tackled the biggest job of them all today- cleaning the house. You know how it is. Things start to pile up on the counters, in the bathroom, toys left on the stairs, here and there and everywhere...by itself each area is not that cluttered, until you take the total of all messes.

*Side note-A very bad habit I have is writing important things- phone numbers, important businessc contacts, customers I need to contact- on small pieces of paper. I counted tonight- 38 papers. I need a new system!

Have you ever noticed just how happy you feel when everything is in it's place? Fortunately for my son, and unfortunately for me, his birthday is about a week away so more toys will be arriving to our house soon.

Augh well, it is clean for now. No telling how long it will last. I am even going to be before 12. A pretty good feat, if you ask me.

Great Ideas for Pre-school children

Back to school my hubby went, and my son and I were left alone after a fun summer spent together.

After sitting home two days in a row with my son, I decided there is only so much cartoon watching I can take. Nothing against the Doodlebops, but even I was getting stir crazy. So, I started researching a few things we can do together to pass the time.
  • Bright Beginnings- Thanks to my fellow blogger, Triplet Mom, for this great tip. The public school puts on programs for birth through pre-school age kids. Our area had twenty different public schools that participate, and each of them hold play dates. We could do something everyday if we wanted to! The play dates include an activity for mom and child to do together, a story time, and a light snack. All I had to do was contact the nearest public school and they signed me up. Best of all, it is FREE!

  • The local Children's Museum- our children's museum has two floors devoted to learning and fun. Bubbles, an inside bee hive, legos, a working traffic light, and ride on bugs are among our favorites. Check into a yearly membership, ours is $35 a year, with separate play days set aside for members.

  • The library- I am not new to the library. I started my business through library books. However, I had no idea they have so many programs for younger children! Story hour, play times, a train, and loads of children's book with nooks to read in makes this one of my new favorite finds.

  • MOPS-Stands for Mothers of Preschoolers, and my group meets twice a month for an hour and a half. This one my son goes into childcare, but he loves it and even has a little girlfriend at the group. It gives me time to socialize with other moms and eat breakfast in peace! I love doing crafts as well, so MOPS= relaxation for me. Yearly fees are around $40.

Other fun things on tap (we will include my husband for these)-- hay rides to the pumpkin patch next month at the local family farm and visiting an apple orchard to pick Michigan apples.

So, what are your favorites? Any other ideas?

Wet Bags finally here

I have waited for two and a half months, my PUL slowly depleting...Finally! I have more wet bags! If you have an order on file, I apologize for the delay. Your order will go out on Monday.

If you have not checked them out yet, please go to MiniMe BabyGear to see the new fabrics available.
While you are there, also check out the new footprint plaques. They will become a treasured keepsake for those tiny, precious feet. Customization available with name and date of birth- five colors available.

Also this week, Baby Star products will be coming! I love this blanket-- with the funky edge binding and plush fabrics, it is the perfect blanket for the new baby. Look for it next week in the blanket section.

I have been experiencing website difficulties this weekend, so if you are being re-directed to my old site, that is why. I am hoping it will be fixed by Monday.

Pay it Forward

Have you seen this movie? I actually have not, although I am familiar with the premise. A 12-year-old boy believes in the goodness of human nature and was determined to change the world for the better. He encouraged people to do a random act of kindness to a stranger, they then pass the kindness on to three other people, thus "paying it forward".

I was born into a family with the Pay it Forward concept on the heart. My grandfather would routinely volunteer at the local shelter, get groceries for a local shut-in, let a stranger borrow his new car. He was not only blessed financially because of it, it also led to a generosity of spirit for all those around him. It made all around want to be a better human being. Better Christian.
Last night, I came across an old Oprah show. Bank of America gave each audience member $1,000 and one week to Pay it Forward and change someones life for the better. The hour long show was full of inspirational stories, but here are my favorites:
  • 2 women that saved a local woman's shelter by bringing in hundreds of donations. Bottles, blankets, sippy cups. clothes, children's toys were all donated. Their kindness was infectious, leading to $200,000 being donated to the center through various local business and families in the community.
  • A first grade teacher that is instructing a 68-year-old man how to read along with her first graders. He walks seven blocks each day to the library in order to get a chance to fine tune his reading skills. With her $1,000, they gave him a large quantity of books that he can keep at his home to read at will.
  • A mother of five young children who rode the bus 2 hours each way to work because she did not have money for a car. Four of the people in the audience came together and bought one for her, limiting her drive to 15 minutes each way.

The inspiring stories continued, and as the show went on, the inspiration bubbled in me, "What can I do?" I definitely do not have $1,000 to give away, but what can I do with $10? $100? My time?

I have not come up with an answer yet, but I want you to keep me accountable in doing so. How can I, one person, make a difference?

One thought I have had on my heart is helping people that struggle with infertility. My husband and I consider ourselves lucky. Within a couple of months, the doctors figured out what was preventing us from conceiving and we are currently expecting our second child. However, I know of countless others...struggling each month to conceive-- an emotional and financial struggle. Only if you have been there month after month when the hopelessness sets in do you fully understand how difficult it is. For many, the months end with thousands of dollars in debt and few options left because of financial hardships.

So, I challenge you- what will you do? What are your ideas? Will it be giving gift cards to a homeless person for lunch, volunteering your time, paying for someone's gas? What can we do to be better stewards of our money, and show our thankfulness for what we have? I would love to hear your ideas....

Business Ramblings...

I have to admit that one of the best parts of my business is meeting other women. I love getting e-mails with pictures of your grandchildren or kid's wearing something purchased at MiniMe BabyGear. Some precious new life curled up with a Baby Birdie blanket or a proud Big Brother sporting a new Brothers Rock shirt. My new favorite was an e-mail I received this past week from a grandma that just found out her children were expecting a boy and she just could not wait to share. Being in the baby business sure is fun.

Along with that comes the pleasure of meeting other mompreneurs with awesome products. I added a bunch of new products this past weekend from moms in the Grand Rapids area, and I have a feeling that more great products are to come! As the holidays roll around, so do the craft fairs! Grand Rapids is known for having lots of crafters so I cannot wait to see all the beautiful new baby products out there waiting to be introduced to the cyberworld.
A few favorites:
The riding pony- I love this product. It brings me back to galloping outside, chasing down the bad guys that needed lasso-ing. Handmade from mane to tail, this is one of those great products that will actually let your child get exercise and encourage their imagination while playing with it. So many fun options to choose from including my favorite-an Appaloosa pony, $23.95.

Rhinestone onesies with adorable sayings such as "Sassy", "Miss December" (or any month you choose), "Future Supermodel", "Drama Queen". Sold for $22.95, also available in a t-shirt.

Messenger bag- This bag is great for storing little treasures, drink boxes, or toting items off to school. The shape of the bag is gorgeous, and as with anything handmade- the quality is unbelievable. It measures approximately 12" high and the base is 3.5" x 10". The handles are adjustable from 23" to 40. Features a solid fabric with an accent fabric down the middle. The back side of the bag and the interior are the same solid fabric. The interior of the bag has two pockets, key fob, and secured with a magentic snap. Buy it now for $39.95, three styles to choose from.

I am also working on finding an adequate loop for the Wet Happened? Designer wet bag. I am testing a few things out, but plan on adding it to the new design as I have had a lot of requests for it. Thanks to all of you who make my job so much fun!

Introducing....Teething Bling!

I must admit, when my son was little I NEVER wore jewelry. Not only was he fascinated with pulling (okay, yanking) my necklace off, he always put it in his mouth and I was afraid he would choke if my pendant accidentally broke off.

Enter: Teething Bling by Smart Mom. The company name says it perfectly. This was definitely made by a smart mom. Not only are they beautiful, they are also functional. Babies can suck and chew to their hearts content with these stylish pendants. Best of all, they are made from the same materials that a lot of teethers are, so it will sooth their gums as they chew.

These necklaces are non- toxic, 100% lead free, and come with a breakaway clasp to ensure safety. Sold at Smart Mom Jewelry for $18.90 in eight colors and two shapes (donut and heart), the matching bangle sells for only $12.60 more. The perfect way to keep your baby entertained while on your lap.

A little happy news...

Well, as you can tell from my new profile picture, we are expecting a new little one!! While we are so thrilled, as it was a long journey for us to conceive, it has surely put a damper on my work! I normally work from 9pm- around 3 or 4 am, and it has worked for me for a very long time to keep those hours. However, I do not get morning sickness, I get night sickness! Around 10pm, I am feeling positively green, leading me to throw in the towel much earlier than I would like.

So, I am muddling through and trying to complete everything. Thanks to all who have given me a little slack over the past week or so. I appreciate your patience during this exciting time!

Back from Vacation...

Vacation was so incredibly nice. I thought I was ready to come back to work full force, until I got back and saw the amount of work I have to do! Coupled with the wet bag purchase button not working, it has been a few days of madness around here.

I am trying to process and handmake orders as quickly as possible. Thanks to all of you who waited two long weeks while I played in the sun and sand with my family. Here are a few of my favorite pictures from vacation:

Playing in the fountain at University of Redlands

In the pool with Dad
I am updating my website tonight with a few new fabrics, and a couple of fantastic new products. Coming soon...a messager bag (just in time for school), the Parking Pal Magnet, and the Pacifier Place. I will review them later this week.
Also, please note that I have been having some problems with my shopping cart. It is not allowing wet bags to be added to the cart. If you would like to purchase one immediately, please use my old site:
and you will still be able to purchase them directly. I am sorry- I have someone looking into it right now! Thank you for your patience!

Off to vacation (and some work)

Tomorrow, we leave for vacation. After a lot of frantic running around to drop off final stock to stores and return e-mails, getting the house sitter(s) all lined up, my orders cleared, and packing, I am finally ready for a little relaxation. I plan on hitting the beach, buying some fabric while I am in Los Angeles, and meeting some of the people I deal with every day here at MiniMe BabyGear- InStyle Moms, Crafty Babies, Kissui to name a few.

Before I forget---You might have noticed a change at MiniMe BabyGear. A new website design by Kayzoe. I have been thinking about what I wanted for a long time, and Cher truly made my vision come to life and I cannot imagine a more perfect site!! Along with the change, there is bound to be a few kinks, so I apologize in advance for any trouble there might be due to the newness of this new program/shopping cart.

Also, just because I am closed, does not mean you cannot shop! I will be taking care of orders immediately once I return, and all orders placed while I am away will go out around August 13.

I am off! Wish me luck on the plane with my almost three year old:-)

Friday, July 20, 2007

Just a reminder:

MiniMe BabyGear will be closed July 25 though August 7 for a much needed vacation. Any order placed after July 23rd will be processed when I return, and I will try to work through orders as quickly as possible. Thanks for your understanding!

On Newstands Now...

If you happen to be strolling through a Barnes and Noble, pick up a copy of Pregnancy and Newborn Magazine. The Wet Happened? wet bag is featured on page 108, it is the hot pink version inside the green diaper bag. Thanks to Lacey Major, the senior editor, for her awesome review both on the blog and also in the magazine. This magazine is a must for new or expecting moms-it is full of great ideas, products, and tips for the new baby. Comfy Crawlers and MadebyAngie wipes cases, two fabulous brands carried at MiniMe BabyGear, were also in the same issue!
Just a FYI--the Breastfeeding Buddy is also slated to be in the October issue, so keep your eyes peeled for that as well.

I have been drooling over these bracelets for months. Made with .925 sterling silver and Swarovski crystals, Swarovski pearls, semi-precious stones and glass beads, these bracelets are prefect for any gifting occasion! Equisite yet wearable...they even come wrapped!

How great is this? So many companies leave out the boys when it comes time for the great items- not Baby Emi! Boys Bracelets are also available. My favorite- the Pirate Booty Bracelet.

What I love: the Mommy and Me set. This set is the perfect gift for celebrating mom.

Employee of the Month

I often say that one of the biggest challenges of running a business is the various hats that have to be worn. For example: sewing, manufacturing, cutting, packaging, shipping, adding new products, order processing, invoicing, website maintanance and troubleshooting, newsletter. blogging, marketing, PR, buyer...the list goes on and on.

Lately, I have needed help-- big time. Thankfully, my husband is a teacher and thus has the summer off. He has helped me tremendously lately-- cutting all of my fabric, my invoicing, daily trips to the post office, and store hopping for things I have run out of.

Someday, I will return the favor. For now, thanks... I owe you one.

Happy Mother's Day!

Lately, I have been adding so many products, that is all I have been featuring! While I love to showcase some of the other designers here at MiniMe BabyGear, it has been a while since I jotted anything for the blogging world.

It has been beautiful here in Michigan- about 78 degrees. I can hardly believe that a month ago we still had snow on the ground! It has been a strange spring here. I am fortunate because my hubby is a teacher so he stays home all summer. We have a lot of fun and lots of lazy days and entertaining friends.

I did want to point out the Great Cloth Diaper Hunt is going on- www.diaperdecisions.com. Basically an internet scavenger hunt, there are many, many prizes awarded- plus it is so much fun to hunt!

Also this month: if you sign up for my newsletter, I am giving away one Circus Circus Wet Happened? bag, and one set of burp cloths. Winner to be drawn June 1st, and notified via e-mail. No purchase necessary. Also in the month of May, spend $50 at MiniMe BabyGear and get a double fun onesie of your choice free! Enter your choice during checkout.

And for all you Mothers- Have a wonderful Mother's Day! Children are a precious gift from God, and I am so thankful I have my little one to spend the day with. We celebrate you today!

Introducing: Lil' Sugarpum

When I was fourteen, I spent the better part of my summer baby sitting for a little girl. She always had the cutest outfits on, but never had anything in her hair. Naturally, for Christmas I bought her a bunch of hair clips to complete each outfit. Thus, my love of all things girly began.
MiniMe BabyGear is proud to introduce Lil' Sugarplum- beautiful boutique hair clips. The best part? Not only are they adorable, but the infant clips have a Velcro strip inside requiring only a few strands of hair. These are great for party favors, weddings, birthdays, or simply every day wear. With so many styles to choose from, and shipping only $1, pick up a few of them now for your little girl. $6.99 each at MiniMe BabyGear.

Introducing: Princess Burps, new sale section, and new ribbon choices

You know that feeling you get when you have stared at a computer screen too long? I have it- my eyes feel downright bug-gy.

For a while now, I have promised a friend that I would come up with a Princess themed burp cloth- it has literally sat on my table waiting to be photographed for weeks. With "Princess" embroidered in pink and matching "Pretty as a Princess" and princess themed-glass slipper, crowns, flowers ribbons, this will be a sure hit for that little princess in your life. Personalized under the "Princess" with your choice of first name. Retails for $9.95, available now at MiniMe BabyGear.

Also new: sale section. Many items I have in inventory here do not fit into any current category. Perhaps I sold an item in the past and discontinued the line, or maybe the font was larger than usual, or simply just items I want to give you a good deal on- all of these will be under the sales section soon. I only added three items tonight, but I have many more waiting to be added. chekc back soon, and Happy Shopping!

I also updated and added many ribbons. If you do not see what you are looking for, please contact me and I will try to accomodate any and all requests.

Coming soon: Goodfather DVD's and Hair Clips, and the totally redesigned Diva Robes

Tagged!

I was tagged today by my friend Kelly over at Start Up Princess. If you own a business and have not checked out Start Up Princess, you are missing out. Her blog is full of great tips on PR help, marketing, website design, time management --to name a few. What I love most is that she finds all the great information so I do not have to!
Anyway, she tagged me to list a few reasons why I blog. Since I love the suspense of countdown, here it goes:

3. It is an easy way for me to keep all of my customers updated regarding what is going on at MiniMe BabyGear. When I add or change items, it is nice to have a place to bring them to your attention. More than that, it is fun to hear feedback and get ideas from readers.

2. I love to share information. Whether it is starting a home-based business, a favorite great book I am reading, or another great website I found, I love sharing.

and the number one reason--I love getting to know people through blogging. I maintain a personal and business blog, and have met so many unique and talented people through blogging.

Blogging connects people, and I am so fortunate to come across so many intelligent and caring people online.

Congrats to Marina Westerdahl, GissyBella

Marina has been mentioned a few times here at MiniMe BabyGear. She is the owner of GissyBella, maker of the Comfy Crawlers. A couple of months ago, both she and I came across the call for entries for The Costco Connection at StartUpPrincess.com. A magazine produced by COSTCO, they were looking for outstanding women that used COSTCO to start their business. Marina entered a very well written essay about using COSTCO to start GissyBella- everything from creating a website to finding suppliers. Word has it that her husband loves COSTCO so much he took her there on their first date!

It was just announced that she beat out around 1000 other applicants to be named COSTCO's entrepreneur to watch. Keep your eye out for the article, and congratulations to Marina and the whole staff at Gissy Bella!

Introducing: Ellie Bellie Capes

Its a Bird, It's a Plane! No, it is your child dressed up in one of these pint sized super hero capes.
I came across these capes a few months ago when I did a product trade with the maker. My son fell in love immediately with his super hero cape, and I absolutely love two things about them:

  • It is a cute option for boys. So many times, dress up is only focused on girl items. Very few companies offer whimsical and fun items for boys, so I love it when I find something for all you fellow moms of boys out there.

  • The personalization- not only is the cape adorable, but it comes with your child's first letter across the back. No more beat up towels scrunched around tiny necks, they have their very own super hero cape for flying over tall buildings in a single leap.

Please allow two weeks for delivery. Sold now at MiniMe BabyGear in your choice of Black Dots/Aqua (shown) or orange on orange. Spoil your little one today with this fantastically fun cape for $30.
